Elbow Pain


The elbow is a major attachment point for many of the muscles of the forearm.

The muscles of the forearm that allow you to bend your hand backward attach to the outside part of your elbow.

And the muscles that allow you to bend your hand forward attach to the inside part of your elbow.

The elbow joint itself is made up of three bones: radius, ulna, and humerus.

There are also a few fluid filled bursa (or fluid filled sacs) that help the tendons and muscles to glide smoothly past each other when you move your elbow.

The most common causes of elbow pain are tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.

Both of these conditions are over-use injuries.

Tennis elbow is caused by inflammation of the tendons attached on the outside part of the elbow.

Golfer’s elbow is caused by inflammation of the tendons attached to the inside part of the elbow.

There are many other reasons to have elbow area pain.

It is important to be evaluated by a physician so that you are working with the correct diagnosis so that you can get better.The first step to reducing pain is to first determine where the pain is starting.

This is typically accomplished by your physician listening to how your pain started and recognizing what makes your pain worse as well as with thorough physical examination of your painful area.

X-rays, MRI, and special nerve and muscle testing may also be used to take a better look at your condition.

Once the main problem is identified, then a treament plan can be started to treat it at its source.Surgery is not usually needed to treat elbow pain.

There are certain situations where surgery may ultimately be needed. However, you want to be fully evaluated and try all means of conservative treatment before undergoing an operation on your elbow.

There are many types of minimally invasive elbow injections that we may be able to use to reduce the pain quickly.

Injections are typically used when the pain is so severe that it prevents you from working, performing any type of exercise, or if you cannot progress through the exercise program because of the pain.

Very often, all that is needed is the right treatment plan, persistence, teamwork and dedication to your health to help reduce or eliminate your elbow pain.
